What We Look For During Assessments

When a homeowner applies for assistance through BuildBright Foundation, one of the most important steps is the home safety assessment. This on-site evaluation helps our team identify hazards, determine the severity of issues, and prioritize repairs that restore a safe living environment.

1. Structural Stability and Visible Damage
We check for sagging floors, cracked walls, soft spots, roof sagging, and deteriorating support areas.

2. Roof and Water Intrusion Issues
Water intrusion can cause major safety problems. We look for leaks, stains, rotten wood, damaged flashing, clogged gutters, and moisture entry around windows and chimneys.

3. Electrical Safety Concerns
We inspect for hot outlets, flickering lights, exposed wiring, overloaded panels, outdated systems, and improperly installed fixtures.

4. Plumbing and Water System Issues
We look for leaks, corrosion, water pressure problems, loose toilets, signs of past flooding, and mold risks.

5. Mold, Mildew, and Air Quality
We inspect for visible mold, musty odors, poor ventilation, water-damaged drywall, and high-humidity areas.

6. Accessibility and Mobility Challenges
We assess stair safety, lack of handrails, narrow doorways, unsafe bathrooms, and areas requiring ramps or grab bars.

7. Safety Features and Emergency Readiness
We check smoke detectors, CO detectors, exit pathways, locks, lighting, and clear entry points.

8. Environmental and Exterior Hazards
We evaluate broken steps, damaged siding, overgrown trees, walkway hazards, drainage issues, and foundation cracks.

What Happens After the Assessment?
Our team reviews all findings, prioritizes repairs, determines eligibility, creates a plan, and schedules work using volunteers, contractors, or both.
